The Four (4) Steps to Successful Business Planning

A company must have a:

  1. Strategic Plan: A document that reflects the long-term, 30K foot, strategic vision of your organization (generally covering 3-5 years).  Think of it as the roadmap to your dreams.
  2. Business Plan: An annual document supporting the strategic plan and identifies a set of S.M.A.R.T. goals in a single year.
  3. Action Plan: A document that breaks down each goal in your business plan and identifies tasks needed to accomplish them.
  4. Evaluation Plan:  The most important part of building any of these plans is the process by which you will monitor and evaluate its success.

Each piece of this roadmap is connected to the other.  Starting with the ability to create your vision, that must be supported by the specific goals set down to begin the implementation process.  Once the goals are set down, the action plan needs to be created that supports the business plan so that tasks can be completed. The actual measure of success against any business planning process will be how well you monitor and evaluate the progress against the plan.

Strategic business planning is an organizational management activity that is used to set priorities, focus energy and resources, strengthen operations, ensure that employees and other stakeholders are working toward common goals, establish agreement around intended outcomes/results, and assess and adjust the organization’s direction in response to a changing environment.
